Why Modern Society is Losing Hijab Values: Jalil Uncle’s Insight on Islam, Modesty, and Moral Decline
Jalil Uncle’s Perspective: Returning to the Primitive Age and the Reality of Modern Attire
According to Jalil Uncle, we are going back to that primitive age. He says our ancestors used to wear very little clothing, and now the same is visible around us. Many immature intellectuals have even been heard expressing opinions that a person should have the freedom to not wear clothes if they wish.
Without pausing, Uncle continued— "Your generation thinks that hijab (modesty) is a habit inherited through tradition; it was appropriate only in the early days of Islam, and now in the present age, hijab has no necessity."
However, Allah Almighty clearly commands in the Holy Qur’an:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is well acquainted with what they do.”
— (Surah An-Nur: 30)
In the following verse, Allah says:
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not to display their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof, and to draw their headcovers over their chests, and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”
— (Surah An-Nur: 31)
You proudly call yourselves people of the primitive age; do you know that before the light of Islam came, people wore clothes? They did wear clothes. You don’t know anything properly, yet you act as if you know everything. Stop telling stories about the primitive age — you just don’t want to obey the Islamic rules and restrictions, that’s all.
But remember, if you disobey Allah’s commands, severe punishment awaits. Allah Almighty says:
“Indeed, those who disdain My verses – We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.”
— (Surah An-Nisa: 56)
This time Uncle, annoyed, said, “You all have become notorious fools; even though you have clothes, you live like people in the primitive age who had none. Back then, there was very little clothing available, so they wore very little. But now, what I see makes me think all of you are mindless donkeys.”
Analysis: Undervaluing Islamic Commands in the Shadow of Modernity
Jalil Uncle’s words reflect a harsh reality of our present society. In today’s world, under the shadow of modernity, many people misunderstand or ignore the fundamental rules of Islam. They think religious laws change with time, but Islam is a timeless code whose commandments are equally valid today.
Our ancestors wore little clothing due to their social and physical circumstances. But in this modern era, where diverse types and quantities of clothing are available, the Islamic injunctions on modesty and hijab must be upheld.
The Command of Hijab: The Foundation of Social and Moral Life
Hijab is not merely about covering the body; it is a social and moral ordinance that preserves dignity, beauty, and social order. When we stray from Allah’s commandments, immorality, indecency, and chaos increase in society. This damages both individual character and collective discipline.
The Responsibility of Our Generation: Following Islamic Commands
Our generation must seek correct Islamic knowledge and, by following the Quran and Sunnah, establish a clean, respectful, and moral society. We should stay away from modernist confusion and sincerely practice the true Islamic way of life.
Jalil Uncle’s statement holds a mirror to the misconceptions and negligence of our generation. Islam provides a comprehensive code of life that is never outdated by modernity. Instead, following these commandments allows us to maintain a better, safer, and more sacred personal and social life.
Let us internalize Allah’s commands and shape our lives accordingly, so that hijab is not just a historical practice but an inseparable part of our present and future lives.
